Smoking Cessation Pills

January 7, 2009

Most smokers who have committed themselves to quit smoking feel that the best way to fight the withdrawal symptoms and cope up with the harrowing time is with the help of smoking cessation pills. These pills allegedly help people fight the pain and the anguish that quitting smoking brings with itself. Though this may be true to some extent, and with some people, the best way to quit smoking is with a strong will power and not some synthetic forces.

Nevertheless, every year, more and more people are being benefited by smoking cessation pills. This is a guide that will inform you about two common smoking cessation pills. They are:

emoticonZyban: is the brand name of a smoking cessation pill. And the actual drug is known by the name of bupropion hydrochloride. Since the pill is more famous by its brand name, therefore people like referring it Zyban. Bupropion was basically developed as treatment for depression. But with consequent tests, it was brought out that the pill produced an effect on ones body that led a person quit smoking. Though the specific working of the drug is not known, but it is accepted that the drug interferes with the normal working of the brain and creates distaste for nicotine and related products.

This is a drug available through prescription only. The best part about this treatment is that when combined with other treatments like Nicotine Replacement Therapy and nicotine patch, among others, the effect is faster and long lasting. But there are certain side effects that can be produced such as insomnia, dry mouth, fluctuating appetite and dizziness among others. This drug is not prescribed to pregnant women and people who suffer from seizure disorders.

emoticonVarenicline: This is a new entrant into the field of smoking cessation pills. The pill is available with the brand name Chantix in the United States. This is also a prescription medicine. The success rate for this pill is not very huge though it has succeeded in helping quite a lot of people in quitting smoking. Varenicline is quite commendable in reducing nicotine craving in people. But this cessation pill also comes with numerous side effects. Some of the common side effects with this pill are sleep disorder, nausea and hallucinations. The pill also shares side effects with the general nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

But before deciding to use these cessation pills to help give up smoking, you should consult a good doctor and follow his advice because a wrong dose can prove to be fatal for life.
